The Gorgon of Los Feliz

Welcome to the dregs of Los Angeles, 2018. The Gorgon of Los Feliz is Cameron Kilbride, a bisexual female in her early twenties, newly evicted, hustling a living by rolling tourists on the fringe of Hollywood, stealing cars—anything to get by. Enter the affluent Stevensons; Richard and Mauve have lost track of their troubled daughter, Tiffany, and fear she has fallen back into pills, last seen on tour across Americawith a psychedelic rock band. Desperate to reel her back home, Richard employs Tiff’s social media mentor (Ms. Kilbride) to hit the road and search for her. With a one-way ticket to Las Vegas, Cam makes it her life’s mission to find Tiffany and bring her back to L.A. for a handsome reward. When she finds their daughter in the Mojave, things soon go haywire, forcing her to steal the girl’s identity to bilk her inheritance; however, once she procures this troubled life, the sordid characters in Tiff’s world begin to haunt her every step. An unflinching look at the exploits of identity, The Gorgon of Los Feliztackles the current American landscape of con artists at large in a world gone mad, picking up the torch left by Patricia Highsmith’s The Talented Mr. Ripley. Critical Acclaim for The Gorgon of Los Feliz: “The Gorgon of Los Feliz (great title, by the way!) is a brilliant, multi-hued mosaic: it’s lurid and sweet, comedic and dark. And at the center of this utterly enjoyable page-turning tale is an anti-heroine for the ages: Cameron Kilbride, a twenty-three year old rock n’roll, motorcycle-riding welfare kid turned autodidact and femme fatale. She’s a survivor, a grifter, and an unexpected gumshoe. There’s also a whole beautiful chorus of other artfully drawn characters, flawed and charismatic, and the end result is that Nolan Knight, whose prose sings and makes you laugh, has crafted with Gorgona real tour de force: so put on your metaphorical bike helmet, hang on, and enjoy the ride!” —Jonathan Ames, author of Karma Doll “Like a reprobate Ross Macdonald, Nolan Knight is back on the lost daughter beat in The Gorgon of Los Feliz, a wild, sprawling punk noir that covers a lot of dangerous ground across Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and the Mojave Desert. Beyond his gimlet eye for lowlife detail and the slangy crackle of his dialogue, what really comes through is Knight’s affection for this cast of damaged characters and the underworlds they inhabit. Start your day with a stiff screwdriver and dive in.” —J.D. O’Brien, author of Zig Zag “With The Gorgon of Los Feliz, Nolan Knight has delivered a stone classic of modern noir. He evokes the City’s seedy underbelly with the bloodshot eye of a barroom poet, coupled with a plot intricate and precise as a suitcase full of stolen Swiss watches. The Gorgon of Los Feliz is a lean, mean page-turner that will mess you up if you look at it the wrong way.” —Tony O’Neill, author of Forged Prescriptions “Nolan Knight’s heart pumps to the seedy rhythm of LA’s dark alleys and divey clubs. His books are fierce, gritty and downright cool as fuck. Read more
